How to Write Better Grok Prompts, Including for Live X Searches

Tell Grok the task, the background and the format you want, just as you would with any assistant. For anything current, add three things that matter for Grok’s live search: the time window (‘last 24 hours’), the kind of sources (X posts, news sites, official pages) and a request to link what it used.

The short version

A good Grok prompt is a good brief, plus a time window and a source rule. The brief is what any assistant needs. The time window and source rule matter more with Grok, because xAI built it to search X and the web live, and it will happily mix fresh posts with older pages unless you say what you want.

Step by step

1. Say the task in one sentence

“Write…”, “Summarize…”, “Compare…”, “Find…”. Start with the verb.

2. Add the background

Who you are, who it’s for, what you already know. “I run a two-person accounting firm. This is for clients who aren’t tax experts.”

3. Set the format

Bullets or paragraphs, length, reading level, a table. “Five bullets, under 120 words.”

4. For anything current, add a time window

“In the last 24 hours”, “this week”, “since Monday”. Without it, you may get a mix of old and new.

5. Say which sources count

xAI says Grok can search X with keyword and semantic search and also browse the web, and it added citations “so you can easily dive deeper into a source”. Ask for what you need:

  • “Use X posts” for reactions and what people are saying.
  • “Use official sources” for rules, prices and announcements.
  • “Link every source you used.”

6. Set the tone

Grok’s tone can be playful. If you need neutral, say “Neutral, factual tone.”

Prompts to copy

A reusable template:

text
Task: [what you want]
Background: [who you are, who it's for, what you know]
Format: [bullets / table / paragraphs], [length]
Sources: [X posts / official pages / both], from [time window]. Link each one.
Tone: [neutral / friendly / formal]

Current reactions:

text
What are people on X saying about [product or event] in the last 48 hours?
Group the reactions into 3 themes, give one example post for each, and link them.

Official answer only:

text
What's the current [rule / price / deadline] for [thing]? Use only the official website
of [organization]. Quote the sentence you're relying on and link the page.

Ask it to ask you:

text
Before you answer, ask me up to 3 questions that would change your answer.

Example

Weak prompt: “What’s going on with the new tax rules?”

Better prompt: “I run a small bakery in Ohio. Summarize any changes to small-business tax rules announced this month that could affect me. Use official government pages first and X posts only for reactions. Five bullets, plain English, link each source.”

Why it works: Grok knows who you are, what period matters, which sources to trust and what the answer should look like. You then open the official links before acting.

Mistakes to avoid

  • No time window for a news question.
  • Not asking for links. Without them you can’t check anything.
  • Treating popular posts as proof. Many likes doesn’t mean correct.
  • Very long prompts with no structure. Use the template above instead.

Good to know

Grok remembers everything earlier in a chat, so you don’t have to repeat the background in every message. Start a new chat when you switch topics, so old context doesn’t leak in.

Frequently asked questions

Does Grok search X automatically?

Often, yes. xAI says Grok chooses its own search queries and can search X with keyword and semantic search, as well as the web. Saying 'search X' or 'use official sources' in your prompt steers it.

Should I tell Grok to be funny or serious?

Tell it the tone you want. If you need a plain, neutral answer for work, say so: 'Neutral, factual tone. No jokes.'
