How to Use Grok for Free: What You Get Without Paying

Sign up at grok.com, in the Grok app or use the Grok tab on X with a free account. xAI’s Free plan gives you daily access to Grok with limited usage. When you hit a limit, wait for it to reset, or upgrade if you hit it often.

The short version

Grok is free to start. xAI’s Free plan costs $0 and includes “daily access to Grok”, with usage listed as “Limited”. For a few questions a day, that’s often enough. Pay only once you keep running into the limit.

Step by step

1. Sign up

Go to grok.com or install the Grok app on iPhone or Android. Sign in with email, Google, Apple or X. If you already use X, you can open the Grok tab there instead.

2. Use one account everywhere

xAI says your subscription and history follow the account you signed in with. If you use Apple on your phone and Google on your laptop, you have two separate accounts.

3. Spend your free use on what Grok does best

Free use goes further when you use it for things that are hard elsewhere: current news, what people on X are saying, a quick image idea. Save long drafts for when you need them.

4. When you hit a limit

You’ll see a message that you’ve reached your limit. Free limits reset over time, so you can come back later. If you keep hitting it at the same point in your week, that’s your sign to look at a paid plan.

5. Compare before you pay

xAI’s current plans start at $8 a month (Plus) and go up to $200 a month (Ultra), as listed on October 29, 2026. See choose a Grok plan.

I have limited messages, so do this in one answer: summarize [topic] in 5 bullets,
list the 3 best sources, and tell me the one thing I should check myself.

Batch small jobs together:

Do these three things:
1. Rewrite this sentence to sound friendlier: [sentence]
2. Suggest 5 subject lines for an email about [topic]
3. Explain what [term] means in one sentence

Example

You: run a small shop and want to know, each morning, what people locally are saying about a road closure.

A good free setup: one message a day in the Grok tab on X: “What are people in [town] saying about the [road] closure today? Link the posts.” That’s one message, and you get the answer plus the posts to check.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Long back-and-forth on the free plan. Every follow-up uses your allowance. Put the full brief in the first message.
  • Paying for the wrong thing. Some plans also include Cursor (a coding tool) and X benefits. If you only want more Grok chat, compare the cheaper tiers first.
  • Two accounts by accident. Check you’re signed in with the same method on every device.

When not to use it

If you rely on Grok for daily work, image or video generation, or long research, the free limits will slow you down. xAI’s FAQ says paid plans draw from one weekly pool that you can spend across chat, Imagine and voice. Check your usage under Settings, Usage: check your Grok usage limits.

Frequently asked questions

How many messages do I get on the free plan?

xAI lists Free usage as 'Limited' and doesn't publish a fixed message count on its pricing table. Limits can change, so the simplest test is to use it for a week and see if you run out.

Do I keep free access if I pay and use up my weekly allowance?

Yes. xAI's FAQ says that when a paid plan's weekly limit is reached, you still have Grok's free tier limits on Chat and Voice, which reset on their own schedule.
