How to Stop X Using Your Posts and Grok Chats to Train Grok
On X, go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Data sharing and personalization, then Grok & Third-party Collaborators. Turn off Data Sharing to stop your public data and Grok interactions being used for training, and switch off personalization if you want that too. Opting out works going forward; delete your Grok history separately.
The short version
X has two separate Grok switches, and you probably want to check both. One controls whether your data trains Grok. The other controls whether Grok personalizes its answers with your X activity. A third option deletes the Grok chats you’ve already had on X.
Step by step
1. Open the right menu
On x.com or in the X app, go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Data sharing and personalization, then Grok & Third-party Collaborators. Menu names on X change from time to time; if you can’t find it, search “Grok” in the settings search box.
2. Turn off training
X’s Help Center says X may share your public X data and your interactions, inputs and results with Grok on X with xAI to train and fine-tune Grok and other AI models. The Data Sharing setting in this menu controls that. Untick it to opt out.
3. Decide on personalization
The same menu has a separate switch, “Allow X to personalize your experience with Grok”. X says personalization can draw on your profile, posts, engagement and interests. Turning it off doesn’t stop training, and turning off training doesn’t stop personalization. Set each one the way you want.
4. Delete past Grok conversations
In Data sharing and personalization, open the Grok section and choose Delete Conversation History. X says this deletes your Grok conversations on X, with removal from its systems within 30 days unless they must be kept for security or legal reasons.
5. Repeat on grok.com if you use it
If you also chat at grok.com or in the Grok app, change the setting there too. See keep your data private in Grok.
What opting out doesn’t do
- It doesn’t undo the past. Opting out applies from now on. Use Delete Conversation History for old chats.
- It doesn’t make your posts private. Public posts are still public to everyone on X.
- It doesn’t cover group chats. X says that if Grok is added to an X Chat group, X and xAI get access to every message from then until Grok is removed.
Prompts to copy
Check what you’ve been sharing (ask in Grok on X):
In general terms, what kinds of information can you use from my X account to personalize
your answers? Don't repeat any of my private details back to me.
Write a note to your team:
Write a short, neutral note to my team explaining how to turn off Grok training on X:
Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Data sharing and personalization >
Grok & Third-party Collaborators. Under 100 words.
Example
You: run your business account on X and use Grok to draft replies.
A sensible setup: training off, personalization on (so Grok knows your business’s tone from your posts), and old chats deleted once a quarter. Your team follows the same steps on their personal accounts if they want the same.
Mistakes to avoid
- Changing one switch and assuming you’re done. Training and personalization are separate.
- Forgetting the Grok app. grok.com has its own setting.
- Pasting private details into Grok anyway. X’s Help Center advises not sharing personal or sensitive information with Grok.
Good to know
These menu names come from X’s Help Center as of October 29, 2026. X changes its settings screens often; search “About Grok” in X’s Help Center for the current path.
