How to Use Grok on X: Ask About Any Post or Thread
In the X app or on x.com, open Grok from the Grok icon in the navigation bar, or tap the Grok icon on a post to get a summary or background on that post. Ask follow-up questions like ‘Who is this account?’ or ‘What’s the context?’, and open the posts Grok cites before you share its answer.
The short version
Grok on X is built for one job other assistants can’t do as easily: explaining what you’re looking at on X right now. A confusing post, a long thread, a trend you don’t understand. Open Grok right there, ask, and check the posts it points to.
Step by step
1. Open Grok
X’s Help Center says you can open Grok by selecting the Grok icon in the navigation bar of the X app or website. That opens a chat with Grok inside X.
2. Ask about a single post
When xAI introduced the Grok button in 2024, it said the button appears on posts across your home timeline to help you “discover relevant context” and “understand real-time events”. X describes tapping the Grok icon on a post to get an AI analysis, summary or background facts about that post. The icon’s exact place can move between app versions.
3. Ask follow-up questions
Once Grok has the post, keep going:
- “What’s the background to this?”
- “Who is this account, and what do they usually post about?”
- “Is the claim in this post supported by other sources?”
4. Paste a link when the button isn’t there
If you can’t find the icon, copy the post’s link (Share, then Copy link) and paste it into a Grok chat with your question.
5. Check before you repost
Grok’s answer is a starting point. Open the posts and pages it cites before you quote it or reply to anyone.
Prompts to copy
Explain a post:
Explain this post in plain English: what it refers to, any inside jokes or abbreviations,
and why people are reacting to it. [paste post link]
Summarize a long thread:
Summarize this thread in 5 bullet points, then tell me the strongest point and the
weakest point in it. [paste link to the first post]
Get the context on a trend:
Why is "[trending term]" trending on X today? Give me the background in 3 sentences
and link 3 posts that show what people are saying.
Example
You see: a post from a local business owner that says “Well, that’s the end of free parking on Main Street” with hundreds of replies.
You ask Grok: “What’s this about? Is there an official announcement?”
A good result: a short explanation that a city council vote is being discussed, links to the posts and a news page it found, and a note that it couldn’t find the official notice. You then check the city’s own website before you tell your customers anything.
Mistakes to avoid
- Treating Grok’s summary as the final word. Posts can be wrong, outdated or sarcastic. See fact-check Grok.
- Adding Grok to a group chat without asking. X says Grok then has access to the whole conversation.
- Forgetting your settings. If you don’t want your Grok chats on X used for training, change it first: stop X using your posts to train Grok.
Good to know
You can use Grok on X with a free X account, with limited usage. Paid plans raise the limits. Button names and placements on X change often; X’s Help Center (“About Grok”) has the current steps.
