How to Edit a Photo with Grok Imagine Using Plain Words
Open Grok Imagine, add the photo you want to change and describe the edit in plain words: ‘Replace the background with a plain white wall’ or ‘Make it look like a watercolor’. Ask for one change at a time and say what must stay the same. Edited images carry a Grok watermark.
The short version
You don’t need photo-editing skills to make simple changes with Grok Imagine; you need clear sentences. xAI describes Imagine as a tool to “create and edit images”. Upload a photo, say exactly what to change and what to leave alone, and go one step at a time.
Step by step
1. Start with a good photo
Use a sharp, well-lit image. xAI’s FAQ recommends images of at least 1000 by 1000 pixels for detailed visual work, and lists JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and BMP as supported formats.
2. Add it to Imagine
Open grok.com/imagine or Imagine in the Grok app and add your photo. Button names change; look for an upload or + option.
3. Describe one change
Say what to change and what to keep:
- “Replace the background with a plain light-gray wall. Keep the product exactly as it is.”
- “Make the lighting warmer, like late afternoon sun.”
- “Turn this photo into a pencil sketch.”
4. Build on the result
If the edit works, ask for the next change on top of it. If it doesn’t, go back and reword the request rather than stacking fixes.
5. Compare with the original
Look closely at edges, hands, text and logos. AI edits can quietly change details you didn’t ask about.
Prompts to copy
Clean product background:
Replace the background with a plain white studio background and a soft shadow under the product.
Don't change the product's shape, color or label.
Seasonal version:
Make this storefront photo look like a snowy winter evening, with warm light in the windows.
Keep the sign and the building exactly the same.
Style change for a social post:
Turn this photo of our team's dog into a bright, flat cartoon illustration.
Keep the red collar. Plain yellow background.
Tidy up:
Remove the cables and the coffee cup from the desk. Change nothing else.
Example
You have: a phone photo of a handmade bowl on a cluttered kitchen counter.
You ask: “Replace the background with a plain light wooden table and a white wall. Keep the bowl exactly as it is.”
A good result: the same bowl on a clean, simple background. You compare the bowl’s pattern with the original. If the pattern changed, you say so: “The pattern on the bowl changed. Keep the original pattern.” If it still changes, use the real photo for your shop listing.
Mistakes to avoid
- Vague requests. “Make it better” gives random changes. Name the change.
- Not saying what to keep. Always add “keep X the same”.
- Editing product details. A listing photo must show the real product. Changing its color or shape misleads buyers.
- Editing photos of real people to put them in places or situations that didn’t happen.
When not to use it
Don’t use AI edits for anything that has to be a true record: insurance claims, property listings, before-and-after results, ID or document photos. Don’t try to remove the Grok watermark either; xAI says that’s prohibited under its Acceptable Use Policy.

Frequently asked questions
Can Grok edit any photo I upload?
It can edit many kinds of photos, but xAI's rules apply, and some requests will be refused. Only upload photos you own or have permission to use, and don't edit pictures of real people in ways that could mislead or embarrass them.
What image files can I upload?
xAI's FAQ lists JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and BMP. GIF and SVG support varies by platform. It recommends high-resolution images (1000 by 1000 pixels or more) for detailed work.
