How to Turn an Image into a Video with Grok Imagine
In Grok Imagine, start from an image (one you made or one you upload) and describe what should move and how the camera behaves, or describe the whole clip in text. Keep it to one simple action. Video uses much more of your usage allowance than chat, and every clip carries a Grok watermark.
The short version
The easiest Grok video starts from a still image you already like. xAI describes Grok Imagine as a tool to create images and “animate them into videos”. Pick the image, describe one simple movement, and generate. Simple clips come out better than busy ones.
Step by step
1. Get your starting image
Make one in Imagine (see make images with Grok Imagine) or upload your own photo. Only use photos you have the right to use.
2. Describe the motion
Say what moves, how, and what the camera does:
- Subject: “Steam rises from the coffee cup.”
- Camera: “Slow push in”, “Camera stays still”, “Slow pan left”.
- Mood: “Calm, warm morning light.”
3. Keep it to one action
One movement per clip. “The dog shakes off the rain” works. “The dog runs, jumps, catches a ball and waves” usually doesn’t.
4. Generate, watch, adjust
If something looks wrong, change one word and try again: “slower”, “no camera movement”, “keep the background still”.
5. Watch your usage
xAI’s FAQ says products cost different amounts depending on compute, and that a chat message uses little while a high-quality video uses far more. On paid plans, check Settings, Usage to see how much of your weekly pool video has used.
Prompts to copy
From a product photo:
Animate this photo: the camera slowly pushes in toward the mug while steam rises gently.
Background stays still. Calm, warm light. No text.
From text only:
A short clip of autumn leaves falling past a shop window on a quiet street,
camera fixed, soft afternoon light, realistic style.
Get ideas first (in a Grok chat):
I sell handmade candles. Suggest 5 short video ideas for a social post, each with one
simple movement, written as ready-to-use Grok Imagine prompts.
Example
You have: a photo of your bakery’s window display.
You type: “Animate this: a slow pan from left to right across the window, a few snowflakes falling outside, everything inside stays still.”
A good result: a short, calm loop that works as a background for a holiday post. You add your text and opening hours in your video or social app, not in the prompt.
Mistakes to avoid
- Too much action. More movement means more strange results, like extra fingers or melting objects.
- People’s faces. Faces and hands are where AI video most often looks wrong. Keep people small or out of the frame.
- Burning your allowance on drafts. Get the still image right first; it’s cheaper than regenerating video.
- Using other people’s photos. Upload only images you own or are allowed to use.
When not to use it
Don’t use AI video to show what a real product, place or service actually looks like. Customers expect real footage for that. Never animate photos of real people without their permission, and keep the watermark: xAI says some places legally require AI labels.

Frequently asked questions
Why did my 720p video come out at 480p?
xAI's FAQ says 720p videos automatically fall back to 480p once you reach the 720p cap for your plan.
Can I remove the watermark from a Grok video?
No. xAI says there's no setting to remove it, and removing or hiding it is prohibited under its Acceptable Use Policy.
How long can a Grok video be?
Length and quality depend on your plan and change often. Check the options shown in Imagine before you plan a clip around a specific length.
