How to Check Your Grok Usage Limits and What to Do When You Hit Them

Go to Settings, then Usage, on grok.com or in the app. You’ll see the percentage of your weekly pool used, a breakdown by product and your reset date. When you reach the limit, paid features pause until the reset; you keep free-tier Chat and Voice, and you can buy Extra Usage Credits or upgrade.

The short version

Paid Grok plans give you one weekly pool to spend on anything: chat, images, video, voice. xAI moved to this system in June 2026, replacing separate daily limits per product. That’s flexible, but video can drain the pool quickly. Check Settings, Usage before a big project.

Step by step

1. Open your usage page

On grok.com or in the app, go to Settings, Usage. xAI says you’ll see:

  • a progress bar with the percentage of your weekly pool used
  • a breakdown by product (API, Build, Chat, Imagine, Voice)
  • your weekly reset date and time
  • your Extra Usage Credits balance, if you have any

2. Find what’s using it

If Imagine shows most of your usage, that’s probably video. xAI says a chat message uses little compute, while a high-quality video or long coding task uses far more.

3. Plan heavy work around the reset

If your reset is on Friday and you’re at 90% on Wednesday, save video for after the reset, or draft the still images first and animate only the best one.

4. When you hit the limit

xAI says paid features pause until your weekly reset. You still keep Grok’s free tier limits on Chat and Voice, which reset on their own schedule. Your options:

  • Wait for the reset.
  • Buy Extra Usage Credits from the Usage tab on the web, from $5. They’re used after your included usage runs out and expire one year after purchase.
  • Turn on Auto Top Up, with an amount and a monthly cap you choose.
  • Upgrade to a plan with a bigger pool.

5. Set a spending cap

On The X Subscription, xAI says a monthly additional usage limit caps what top-ups can spend, and Auto Top Up only runs if you turn it on. Manage both at grok.com/dashboard.

Prompts to copy

Save usage on images:

text
Before generating anything, write me 3 different image prompts for [idea].
I'll choose one, and only then generate it.

Do more in one chat message:

text
In one answer: summarize this, list the 3 decisions I need to make, and draft a short email
to my team about it. [paste text]

Example

You: make product videos for a small online shop, and your pool runs out by Tuesday.

A better routine: draft and approve the still images first (cheaper), animate only the two best, and keep chat for writing captions. Check Settings, Usage on Monday. If you still run out every week, compare the cost of credits against the next plan up; xAI says upgrading is usually better value for regular overuse.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Turning on Auto Top Up without a cap. Set a monthly limit you’re comfortable with.
  • Regenerating video over and over. Fix the image or the prompt first.
  • Buying credits in the app. xAI says Extra Usage Credits can currently only be bought on the web.

Good to know

On The X Subscription, xAI says the pool covers Grok models whether you use them in the Grok apps, the Grok tab on X or Cursor. On Team plans each seat has its own weekly pool.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my usage go so fast?

xAI says products cost different amounts depending on compute. A chat message uses little; a high-quality video or a long coding task uses far more. Check the breakdown under Settings, Usage.

Do Extra Usage Credits expire?

Yes. xAI's FAQ says top-up credits expire one year after purchase unless stated otherwise. You can buy as little as $5, currently on the web only.

Is it better to buy credits or upgrade?

xAI says credits are priced at standard rates, which cost more per action than the usage included in a plan. If you run out most weeks, a higher plan is usually better value.
