Free tool
AGENTS.md generator
Answer six plain questions about your project and this tool writes an AGENTS.md (or CLAUDE.md) for you: why you’re building it, what it must and must never do, how it’s built and how much the agent may do on its own. Copy or download the file, put it in your project’s top folder, and the agent reads it before every job. No account, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

## About this project
(Not filled in yet. Describe the project in one sentence.)
This is a new project; nothing has been built yet.
## Why we are building this
(Not filled in yet. Say what should change for the business.)
## What it must do
(Not filled in yet. List the main things people can do with it.)
## It must never
(Not filled in yet. List your red lines.)
## How it is built
I'm not a developer. Suggest common, well-supported tools, explain each choice in one plain sentence,
and wait for my OK before setting anything up. Prefer free or low-cost services.
## Where things are
Nothing yet. Once the first version exists, write a short list of the main folders and what is in each, and ask me to check it.
## How much you may do on your own
- Planning what to build: suggest what to do and wait for my OK before doing it.
- Writing and changing code: go ahead, then show me the result to check before we keep it.
- Testing that it works: go ahead on your own and tell me afterwards what you did.
- Adding new tools or services: suggest what to do and wait for my OK before doing it.
- Putting it live for customers: suggest what to do and wait for my OK before doing it.
- Changing or deleting real data: don't do this yourself. Explain the steps and I'll do it.
## House rules
- Explain things in plain language. I'm not a developer: define any technical word the first time you use it.
- Work in small steps. Finish and show me one piece before starting the next.
- Ask before adding anything that costs money or needs a new account.
- Never put passwords, keys, card numbers or personal data in files or messages.
- Save a restore point (a git commit) before big changes, so we can undo them.
- When you're unsure, ask me. Don't guess. List anything you assumed.
- When you finish, tell me what you changed and how I can check it myself.
What the file is for
A note the agent reads first
An AI agent starts each job knowing nothing about your project. AGENTS.md is a plain-text note in the project's top folder that tells it why you're building this, what it must and must never do, and how much it may do on its own.
One file, most tools
Many AI coding tools read AGENTS.md. Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md; the generator can save either. The tool comparison lists the file each one reads.
New to all this?
The beginner's guide explains every term, why agents need context, and the four kinds of context with examples, plus a flowchart for working with an agent step by step.
Made by AI Web Center
Rather have it built for you?
I build websites and web apps with AI agents every day, with the same kind of file this tool writes. Try the working examples, or tell me what you need.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AGENTS.md file?
A plain-text Markdown file in the top folder of a project with instructions for AI coding agents: what the project is for, its rules and limits, how it's built and how to check work. Agents read it before they start, so they don't have to guess.
Where do I put the file?
In the top folder of your project, the one that holds everything else, with the name exactly AGENTS.md (or CLAUDE.md for Claude Code). Not in a subfolder.
Should I choose AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md?
AGENTS.md is an open format that many AI coding tools read. Claude Code looks for CLAUDE.md. If you use Claude Code and other tools, keep AGENTS.md and add a CLAUDE.md that contains the single line @AGENTS.md.
I'm not a developer. Can I still use it?
Yes, that's who it's for. The most useful parts, why you're building it and what must never happen, are business knowledge only you have. For the technical step, pick "I don't know" and the file asks the agent to suggest tools, explain them and wait for your OK.
Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?
No. The generator runs entirely in your browser. There's no account, and nothing is sent to a server or stored, so copy or download your file before you close the page.
Can I change the file later?
Yes, and you should. It's plain text: open it in any text editor. When the agent repeats a mistake, add one clear line to the file rather than repeating yourself in the chat.
