Grok on X: What It's Actually Good For (and Where to Be Careful)

Grok is most useful for what happens on X: explaining a post or thread, following live news with a clear time window, and summarizing what people say about a topic. Because much of its information comes from posts, ask it to link sources and separate confirmed facts from early reports, and check the X settings that control whether your posts train Grok.

Every AI assistant can write an email. What makes Grok different is where it lives: inside X, with access to what people are posting right now. That’s its biggest strength, and the reason to use it with a little care.

Where Grok shines

Explaining a post or a thread

Tap the Grok icon on a post to get a summary or the background behind it, then ask follow-up questions. Handy when a thread references something you missed.

Following live news

Ask what’s happening with a clear time window (“in the last 6 hours”) and ask Grok to separate confirmed facts from early reports, with links.

Gauging what people say about a topic

Ask Grok to group what people are saying into a few themes, with example posts for each, and ask how many posts it looked at. That’s a quick read on a product launch, a local issue or your own brand.

Writing posts in your own voice

Give it the point, the audience and two or three of your past posts, and ask for a few short options. Then make it yours. To format the final post with bold headlines and bullets, use our free X post formatter.

Where to be careful

Posts aren’t facts. Early posts during breaking news are often wrong, and an answer built on them can be too. Ask for sources, label which come from X and which from news or official pages, and open the important ones.

Guide: fact-check Grok’s answers

Your posts may be training data. X has a setting under Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Data sharing and personalization > Grok & Third-party Collaborators that controls whether your posts and Grok interactions can be used for training. Grok itself has an “Improve the model” switch under Data Controls, and Private Chat for sensitive questions.
