How to Summarize a YouTube Video with Gemini

On gemini.google.com or in the Gemini app, paste a YouTube link and ask for a summary, or ask Gemini to find videos on a topic and then summarize one. Gemini uses public YouTube information. Google says this needs you to be signed in with Keep Activity on, and it doesn’t work in Live chats.

The short version

Because Google owns YouTube, Gemini can read a public video for you and tell you what’s in it. Paste the link, say what you need from it, and decide in a minute whether the 40-minute video is worth watching.

Step by step

  1. Go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini app, and sign in.
  2. Check that Keep Activity is on (Settings & help > Activity). Google says the YouTube feature doesn’t work without it.
  3. Copy the video’s link from YouTube (Share > Copy link).
  4. Paste it into Gemini with what you want: a summary, the steps, the main argument, or the part that answers your question.
  5. Ask follow-ups in the same chat: “What did she say about pricing?”, “Which tools did he use?”

Ask “Find videos on how to replace a bike chain”, then “Summarize the first video.” Google’s own example works this way.

On Android

Watching in the YouTube app? Open Gemini over it (long-press the power button or say “Hey Google”). Google says you may see a suggestion to ask about this video.

Quick decision:

text
[YouTube link]
Summarize this video in 5 bullet points, then tell me in one line who it's most useful for.

A how-to video as steps:

Turn this into a numbered list of steps with the tools and measurements mentioned.
Note anything the presenter says to avoid.

Find the part you need:

text
[YouTube link]
Does this video explain how to set up automatic payments? If yes, summarize that part
and tell me roughly where in the video it is.

For studying:

Make 10 flashcards from this lecture, then quiz me one question at a time.

Example

You give: a link to an hour-long webinar on bookkeeping for freelancers, plus “What are the three things they say to do every month?”

A good result: three clear tasks with a sentence each. Follow up with “Make this a monthly checklist” and paste it into your notes.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the summary as the video. Gemini can miss or misstate details, especially numbers. Check anything you’ll act on.
  • Asking about private or unlisted content. Google says Gemini uses public YouTube information.
  • Expecting time stamps to be exact. Ask where a topic comes up, then check by jumping to that point.
  • Using it inside Gemini Live. Google says YouTube isn’t available in Live chats for now.

Good to know

Connecting the YouTube app to Gemini lets it personalize suggestions using your YouTube history. That’s optional; you can disconnect it under Customize > Connectors. Summaries work best when you say what you want from the video rather than asking for “everything”.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't Gemini summarize my YouTube link?

Check that you're signed in and that Keep Activity is on; Google says the YouTube feature isn't available when that setting is off. It also isn't available in Gemini Live chats or Gemini in Google Messages.

Can Gemini summarize videos from my watch history?

Not as a full list. Google's Help Center says Gemini can't show a comprehensive list of your watch history, liked videos, saved playlists or subscriptions, and can't save videos or post comments.

Can I turn a video into flashcards?

Yes. Google's learning tools page says you can include a YouTube link and ask Gemini to create study materials from the video.
