How to Study with Gemini: Guided Learning, Quizzes and Flashcards

On gemini.google.com, click Add files, then More tools, then Guided Learning, and ask about your topic; Gemini teaches step by step instead of handing over answers. To practice, upload your notes and ask it to create a quiz, flashcards or a study guide. Study notebooks build lessons from a quiz of what you already know.

The short version

Use Gemini as a tutor, not an answer key. Turn on Guided Learning to work through problems step by step, then test yourself with quizzes and flashcards made from your own notes. Quizzing yourself is where the studying actually happens.

Step by step

1. Learn a topic with Guided Learning

  1. Go to gemini.google.com.
  2. In the text box, click Add files, then More tools > Guided Learning.
  3. Ask your question, and upload your class notes or a photo of a problem with Add files if you like.
  4. Answer Gemini’s questions as it goes. Say “I’m lost” or “Give me a simpler example” whenever you need to.

2. Make study materials

Start your prompt with what to create, then the topic or your notes: “Create flashcards about…”, “Create a quiz about…”, “Create a study guide about…”. Upload your notes with Add files. The result opens in the Canvas panel.

  • Quizzes: click Hint when stuck and More questions at the end. Gemini then points out strengths and focus areas.
  • Flashcards: use Shuffle mode, Hint and Text to speech.

3. Set up a study notebook

Open the sidebar, click New notebook under “Notebooks”, then Study and learn. Tell Gemini your goal (“Help me study for my calculus midterm”) and add your materials. Google says it gives a diagnostic quiz, then builds short lessons and tracks your progress. This needs Keep Activity on.

Prompts to copy

Understand, don’t copy:

text
I'm stuck on this algebra problem: [problem]. Don't solve it.
Ask me one question at a time to help me get there myself.

From your own notes:

text
Create 20 flashcards from these biology notes. Use my wording where possible,
one fact per card.

Exam practice:

text
Create a 15-question multiple-choice quiz on the causes of World War I,
medium difficulty. After I finish, explain every answer I got wrong.

From a video lecture:

Create a study guide from this lecture with key terms, a summary and 5 practice questions.

Example

You give: photos of three pages of chemistry notes before a test on Friday.

A good result: a study guide grouped by topic, then a 10-question quiz. You miss two on balancing equations, so you ask Guided Learning to walk you through one, and do three more practice questions on your own.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Copying answers. You’ll fail the test that doesn’t allow Gemini.
  • Trusting it over your textbook. If the quiz and your class notes disagree, your teacher’s version wins. Ask Gemini to explain the difference.
  • Only reading. Summaries feel productive; quizzes are what make it stick.
  • Cramming in one chat. Use a study notebook so your materials and progress stay together.

Good to know

In the US, signed-in users 18 and over on personal accounts can type @OpenStax to have Gemini draw on OpenStax textbooks, according to Google. For language practice out loud, see use Gemini Live.

Frequently asked questions

Can Gemini make a practice SAT?

Yes. Google's Help Center lists full-length practice tests for the SAT, JEE Main and NEET UG. Ask for a full practice test for the exam, which may include a countdown timer and ends with a score per section.

Is it cheating to use Gemini for homework?

It depends on your school's rules. Guided Learning is designed to explain step by step rather than hand over answers, which keeps the learning with you. Check your teacher's policy on AI.

Can I share a quiz with classmates?

On a personal account, yes: open it in the Canvas panel and click Share to copy a link. Google says work and school accounts can't share quizzes, flashcards or study guides.
