How to Connect Gemini to Gmail, Drive and Calendar
In the Gemini app or on gemini.google.com, type @, pick Gmail, Drive or another Google Workspace service, and ask your question; if it isn’t connected yet, Gemini offers to connect it. Keep Activity must be on, and Gmail’s smart features must be on. Manage connections under Customize > Connectors.
The short version
Connecting Google Workspace lets Gemini search your own email, files and calendar, not just the web. Ask “What did the landlord say about the deposit?” and it finds the email. It’s the most useful thing Gemini can do that a general chatbot can’t, and it’s free.
Step by step
- Sign in to Gemini with the same Google account as your Gmail and Drive.
- Make sure Keep Activity is on (Settings & help > Activity). Google says Gemini can’t connect to Workspace without it.
- In a chat, type @ and pick a service, such as Gmail, Drive or Calendar, or just mention it (“in my email”, “in my Drive”).
- Ask your question. If the app isn’t connected, Gemini offers to connect it. Follow the prompts.
- Check the answer against the sources listed after it. Google warns Gemini can pull from an older email when a newer one exists.
What it covers
According to Google’s Help Center, the Workspace app lets Gemini:
- find, summarize and answer questions from Gmail, Docs and Drive
- create and manage Calendar events
- add, edit and find Tasks and reminders
- create and find Keep notes and lists
Prompts to copy
Find a detail:
@Gmail What dates did Erik propose in the email about the hiking trip?
Summarize a file without opening it:
Find the most recent lease agreement in my Drive and tell me the security deposit
and the notice period for moving out.
Catch up:
@Gmail Summarize this week's emails from my kid's school in 5 bullets.
List any dates and things to bring.
Turn an email into an event:
Check the email Alice sent about our Tahoe trip this weekend and add it to my calendar.
Capture tasks:
Plan a packing list for a 2-night camping trip, then create a reminder in Tasks
to buy the missing items on Thursday.
Example
You ask: “Summarize my recent emails from Harper Elementary.” Then, in the same chat: “When is pajama day?”
A good result: a short summary, then the date with the email it came from. Google notes you only need to name the service in the first message of a chat.
Mistakes to avoid
- Pasting a document or email link. Google says not to; use keywords from the content and name the service instead.
- Using a different account. Gemini only sees the account you’re signed in with.
- Not checking sources. The newest email isn’t always the one Gemini picks.
- Asking it to reorganize Drive. Google says the Gemini app can’t create folders, move files or count items in Drive or Gmail.
Good to know
Connecting Gmail also lets Gemini personalize answers based on your email content; you can turn that off by disconnecting the app. On work or school accounts, your administrator decides which apps are available. If you’d rather keep Gemini away from your inbox, see keep your data private in Gemini.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't Gemini connect to my Gmail?
Google lists three common causes: Keep Activity is off, Smart features in other Google products is off in Gmail's settings, or (on work and school accounts) your administrator hasn't allowed connected apps. Turn the setting on, reload Gemini and try again.
Can Gemini read the attachments and photos in my email?
Not everything. Google says Gemini can't access comments or images in Docs or Gmail, or pictures and videos in Drive. It works with documents, spreadsheets, presentations and PDFs.
Can I disconnect it later?
Yes. On gemini.google.com, click Customize in the sidebar, then Connectors, find the app and click More options > Disconnect.
