Go to gemini.google.com or install the Gemini app, sign in with your Google account, and type what you need: the task, the background and the format you want. Use Add files to attach documents or photos, type @ to bring in your Google apps like Gmail and Drive, and check important facts before you rely on them.

The short version

Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, and its biggest advantage is that it lives where your Google stuff already is. You can chat with it on the web, talk to it on your phone, and use Gmail, Drive, Maps and YouTube. Ask clearly, give it the background, and check what matters.

Step by step

1. Open Gemini and sign in

Go to gemini.google.com in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera or Edge, or install the Gemini app on your phone. Sign in with your Google account. You can ask simple questions signed out, but Google says file upload, image generation, saved chats and connected apps need you to sign in.

2. Ask clearly

Type in the box at the bottom and click Submit. Include what you want, who it’s for and the format:

text
I run a small bakery. Write a sign for the counter explaining that we close early on Sundays,
starting next month. Friendly, under 30 words.

3. Improve the answer

Reply in the same chat: “Shorter”, “Warmer”, “Give me three options”. You can also click Edit text next to your prompt, change it and click Update to get a fresh answer. For some prompts, Show drafts lets you compare other versions.

4. Add files and photos

Click Add files to attach a PDF, a spreadsheet, a photo or a file from Google Drive, then ask about it. See upload files to Gemini.

5. Bring in your Google apps

Gemini uses public information from Google Maps, Flights and YouTube on its own, so you can ask for opening hours or a video summary directly. For your own Gmail, Drive or Calendar, type @ in the box and pick the app. See connect Gemini to Gmail and Drive.

6. Start fresh for a new topic

Click New chat at the top left. Google notes that long chats use more of your usage limit, because Gemini rereads the whole conversation each time.

Prompts to copy

text
I'm [who you are]. I need [what you want] for [who it's for].
Keep it [length / tone / format]. Ask me questions first if anything is unclear.
text
Here's my draft. Tell me the three biggest problems, then rewrite it:
[paste]
text
Find three quiet cafes near [place] that open before 7 a.m.

Example

You ask: “I’m hosting 12 people for a birthday on Saturday. Plan a simple menu I can make mostly the day before, with a shopping list grouped by store section.”

A good result: a short menu, a make-ahead timeline and a grouped list. Follow up with “Two guests are vegetarian” and Gemini adjusts the plan in the same chat.

Mistakes to avoid

  • One-line prompts. “Write a flyer” gets a template; your details get a flyer.
  • Never starting a new chat. Unrelated topics in one long chat dilute answers and use more of your limit.
  • Pasting what you shouldn’t. Passwords, card numbers and other people’s private details stay out. See keep your data private in Gemini.
  • Trusting every fact. When a Sources button appears under an answer, open it and check the source says what Gemini claims.

When not to use it

Don’t rely on Gemini alone for medical, legal or financial decisions; Google’s help pages say the same. Use it to understand, prepare and draft, then confirm with a professional or the original source.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini free?

Yes. Google's plans page lists a free tier at $0 with a Google account that includes image creation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live and Canvas. Paid Google AI plans (Plus, Pro and Ultra) raise usage limits and add features.

Do I need a Google account to use Gemini?

You can try some text features signed out, but Google's Help Center says you need to sign in for chat history, file upload, image generation and connected Google apps. On Android, the Gemini app always needs a signed-in account.

Can Gemini make mistakes?

Yes. Google's own help pages say Gemini can make mistakes and can present wrong information as fact. Check names, numbers, quotes and anything medical, legal or financial.
