How to Use ChatGPT to Write Social Media Posts (a Week in 10 Minutes)

Give ChatGPT a list of what’s actually happening in your business this week, two or three of your past posts as examples of your voice, and the platform. Ask for a week of short posts in that style, then add your own photos and details and cut anything that sounds generic.

The short version

ChatGPT can’t know what happened in your shop this week, and that’s what makes a post worth reading. You bring the real news and a sample of your voice; it turns them into a week of posts in minutes.

Step by step

  1. List what’s real this week: new stock, a busy Saturday, a customer story, an event, a tip.
  2. Paste 2-3 of your past posts that did well, as examples of your voice.
  3. Name the platform: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X each read differently.
  4. Ask for a week at once, one post per day, with a suggested photo for each.
  5. Edit: add specifics, cut clichés, and check every date, price and name.

Prompts to copy

A week of posts:

text
I run [business] in [town]. Here's what's happening this week:
- [news 1]
- [news 2]
- [news 3]
Here are two past posts in my voice:
[paste]
Write 5 [Instagram] posts for Monday to Friday, under 60 words each, in that voice.
For each, suggest a photo I could take. No more than 3 hashtags per post.

One idea, every platform:

text
Turn this news into a post for Facebook (friendly, 80 words), LinkedIn (professional, 100 words)
and X (under 280 characters): [news]

Ideas when you’re stuck:

text
Give me 15 post ideas for a [type of business] that don't involve selling: tips, behind the scenes,
customer questions, local events. One line each.

Example

Your note: “Sold out of pumpkin bread by 11am Saturday, baking double this week.”

A good post: “Last Saturday’s pumpkin bread was gone by 11. 🎃 This week we’re baking twice as much, but early birds still win. Open 7am.” Short, real, and it gives a reason to come in.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Generic filler. “Exciting things are happening!” Give it real news instead.
  • Too many emojis and hashtags. Ask for “at most one emoji, three hashtags”.
  • Posting unchecked. ChatGPT can get dates and prices wrong.

When not to use it

For a crisis, a complaint going viral or a sensitive community issue, write it yourself and take your time. And to add bold headlines and neat bullets to a post for X, use the free X post formatter.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use hashtags ChatGPT suggests?

Use a few that people actually search for in your area or niche, and drop the rest. A long block of generic hashtags looks automated.

Can ChatGPT post for me?

Not by itself in a normal chat. Copy the posts into the platform, or into a scheduling tool, and post them yourself.
