How to Use ChatGPT to Write or Improve Your Resume
Paste your current resume (or your job history as rough notes) and the job ad, and ask ChatGPT to rewrite your experience as results that match what the ad asks for. Then check every line is true, add real numbers where you have them, and keep it to one or two pages.
The short version
ChatGPT is good at turning “responsible for the front desk” into “handled 120 guest check-ins a day with a 4.8 review score”. It can’t know your numbers, so it will ask you for them, or you should give them. Use it to sharpen wording and tailor each version to the job; you stay in charge of the facts.
Step by step
- Remove what it doesn’t need: phone, address, references.
- Paste your resume or notes, plus the job ad you’re applying for.
- Ask for results, not duties: each bullet should say what you did and what changed because of it.
- Fill in real numbers: ChatGPT will suggest where a number would help; you supply the true figure.
- Tailor per job: ask which of your experience best matches the ad and put that first.
- Proofread line by line: delete anything that isn’t true or that you couldn’t explain in an interview.

Rewrite bullets as results:
Here is my work history:
[paste]
Rewrite each job as 3-4 bullet points that start with a strong verb and show results.
Where a number would help, write [NUMBER?] so I can fill in the real figure. Don't invent anything.
Tailor to a job ad:

Which of my experience matches this ad best? Rewrite my summary (3 sentences) and reorder my bullets
so the strongest matches come first. List any requirement in the ad I don't seem to meet.
Check it like a recruiter:
Read this resume as a recruiter hiring for [job title]. In 6 seconds, what stands out and what's missing?
Give me the 5 most important fixes.
Example
Before: “Responsible for social media accounts.”
After: “Grew the bakery’s Instagram from 900 to 6,200 followers in a year with three posts a week, bringing a 15% rise in weekend pre-orders.” (with your real figures)
Mistakes to avoid
- Letting it invent achievements. The
[NUMBER?]trick above stops it from making up figures. - Buzzword soup. “Results-driven synergistic leader” says nothing. Ask for plain, specific language.
- One resume for every job. Tailoring to each ad is where ChatGPT saves the most time.
- Skipping the proofread. Read it aloud once before you send it.
When not to use it
If an application asks you to write something in your own words, like a personal statement for a school, check its rules on AI help. And don’t use ChatGPT to answer live interview questions; use it beforehand to practice.
Related: write a cover letter.
Frequently asked questions
Is it OK to use ChatGPT for my resume?
Yes, as a writing helper. What matters is that everything on it is true and that you can talk about every line in an interview. Never let it add skills, titles or results you don't have.
Should I remove personal details before pasting my resume?
It's sensible to leave out your phone number, home address and anything you don't need help with. ChatGPT only needs your experience and the job ad to help.
