How to Write Product Descriptions with ChatGPT That Actually Sell
Give ChatGPT the product’s real facts (size, materials, what’s included), who buys it and the question they have before buying. Ask for a short, benefit-first description plus a bullet list of specs, in a consistent format, and check every fact against the product.
The short version
ChatGPT writes good product copy from good facts, and invents plausible-sounding ones when you don’t give them. Hand it the specs, the buyer and the buyer’s main worry; ask for benefits first and specs second.
Step by step
- Gather the facts: dimensions, materials, what’s in the box, care, warranty.
- Name the buyer: “a first-time home baker”, “a contractor buying in bulk”.
- Say their main question: “Will it fit my kitchen?”, “Is it dishwasher safe?”
- Ask for a fixed format so every product page matches.
- Check every fact against the product or the manufacturer’s sheet.
Prompts to copy
One product:
Write a product description for my online store.
Product facts: [paste specs].
Buyer: [who]. Their main question before buying: [question].
Format: a 2-sentence opening about the main benefit, then 4-6 bullet points with the specs.
Use only the facts I gave you. If something important is missing, ask me.
A whole catalog, consistently:
I'll paste product facts one at a time. For each, write a description in exactly this format:
[paste one description you like]
Same length and tone every time. Use only the facts I give. Ready?
For search:
Suggest a clear product title (under 70 characters) that includes what a shopper would search for,
and a meta description under 155 characters.
Example
Facts: 12-inch cast iron skillet, pre-seasoned, 7.5 lb, made in the USA, oven-safe, works on induction.
Result: “A 12-inch skillet that goes from stovetop to oven and lasts for decades. Pre-seasoned and ready to cook. • 12 in / 7.5 lb cast iron • Pre-seasoned • Oven-safe, works on induction • Made in the USA.”
Mistakes to avoid
- Letting it guess specs. “Use only the facts I gave you” prevents invented sizes and materials.
- Copying the manufacturer’s text. Every other store has it too. Add what you know about the product.
- Over-the-top claims. “Life-changing” and “best ever” make buyers trust you less, and some claims can’t be backed up.
When not to use it
For anything with legal requirements, like health claims on supplements or safety warnings, follow the regulations and have the wording checked.

Frequently asked questions
Will AI-written product descriptions hurt my Google rankings?
Google's guidance focuses on whether content is helpful and original, not on whether AI helped write it. Descriptions with real, specific details about your product help buyers; copied or generic text doesn't.
How long should a product description be?
Long enough to answer the buyer's questions: often two or three short sentences plus a list of specs. Expensive or technical products usually need more.
