How to Study and Learn Anything Faster with ChatGPT

Ask ChatGPT to explain a topic at your level, then have it quiz you, one question at a time, and explain what you got wrong. Use it to build a study plan and to test your understanding, not to do the work for you, and check facts against your course materials.

The short version

You learn by thinking, not by reading answers. The best way to study with ChatGPT is to make it ask you the questions: explain, quiz, correct, repeat.

Step by step

  1. Say your level and goal: “I’m a nursing student with an exam on the heart in two weeks.”
  2. Ask for an explanation at that level, with an everyday example.
  3. Have it quiz you, one question at a time, waiting for your answer.
  4. Ask why you were wrong, not just what the right answer is.
  5. Explain it back in your own words and ask ChatGPT to find the gaps.
  6. Check facts against your textbook or course notes; that’s what you’ll be tested on.

Prompts to copy

Explain at my level:

text
Explain [topic] to me like I'm [a beginner / a first-year student]. Use one everyday example.
Then ask me one question to check I understood.

Quiz me:

text
Quiz me on [topic] for my [exam]. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer.
If I'm wrong, explain why in two sentences, then ask a similar question. Get harder as I improve.

Find my gaps:

text
Here's my explanation of [topic] in my own words: [paste]. What did I get wrong or leave out?

A study plan:

text
I have [exam] in [3 weeks] and can study [1 hour] a day. Topics: [list].
Make a day-by-day plan with review days, and put my weakest topics first: [list them].

Example

Studying the French Revolution, a student asks for the three biggest causes in simple terms, then says “quiz me”. After two wrong answers about the Estates-General, ChatGPT explains the voting problem with an analogy and asks a follow-up. Ten minutes of that sticks far better than re-reading notes.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Copying answers. You’ll feel productive and remember nothing.
  • Not giving your level. You’ll get explanations that are too simple or too advanced.
  • Trusting dates and figures. Check them against your course material.

When not to use it

During exams or graded work where AI isn’t allowed, and for any assignment whose rules forbid it. When in doubt, ask your teacher.

Frequently asked questions

Is using ChatGPT for homework cheating?

It depends on your school's rules and how you use it. Using it to explain and quiz is usually fine; handing in its writing as your own usually isn't. Check your school's or teacher's policy.

Can ChatGPT replace a tutor?

It's a patient, always-available explainer and quiz partner, which covers a lot of what students need. A good human tutor still notices things it can't, like when you're lost but don't know it.
