How to Use Claude Projects: Knowledge, Instructions and Ideas

In Claude, create a Project for each ongoing piece of work, add the files Claude should know (project knowledge) and how it should behave (project instructions). Every chat in that Project uses them, so you stop pasting the same background. Free accounts can create up to five Projects.

The short version

A Claude Project is a workspace with its own chats, files and instructions. Anthropic describes Projects as “self-contained workspaces with their own chat histories and knowledge bases”. Set one up once, and every chat inside starts with the right context.

Step by step

  1. Create a Project from Projects in the sidebar, and give it a clear name: “Client: Harbor Dental”, “Newsletter”, “Spanish B1”.
  2. Add project knowledge: upload the documents Claude should use, like a brand guide, a price list, notes or past work.
  3. Write project instructions: how Claude should behave here (tone, audience, rules).
  4. Chat inside the Project. Each new chat can use the knowledge and instructions.
  5. Keep it current: replace files when they change.

Project ideas

  • A client: their brief, brand guide and the emails you’ve exchanged.
  • Your newsletter or blog: your best past issues as voice examples, plus your topic list.
  • Customer support: your FAQs and policies, for drafting consistent replies.
  • A course: the syllabus and your notes, for explanations and quizzes.
  • Your website: the plan, page drafts and customer questions.

Instructions to copy

Customer support:

text
You help me draft replies to customers of [business]. Use only the policies in project knowledge.
If a question isn't covered, say so and suggest what to ask me. Tone: warm, brief, no jargon.
Never promise refunds or dates that the policy doesn't allow.

Newsletter:

text
You're my newsletter editor. Match the voice of the past issues in project knowledge.
Keep each issue under 300 words with one main tip and one local update.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing unrelated work in one Project. Separate Projects keep answers focused.
  • Outdated knowledge. Old prices in a file mean old prices in drafts.
  • Uploading what you’re not allowed to share. Projects don’t change what’s safe to upload.

Good to know

Free accounts get up to five Projects. Paid plans get more room for large knowledge bases, and Team and Enterprise plans can share Projects with colleagues, per Anthropic’s Help Center.
