How to Use Claude Artifacts: Documents, Charts and Small Tools
Ask Claude to make something you’d put in front of someone (a document, a chart, a flowchart, a one-page website or a small calculator) and it creates an Artifact that opens beside the chat. Ask for changes in the chat, then share or export it. Artifacts work on the Free plan once ‘Cloud code execution and file creation’ is turned on in settings.
The short version
An Artifact is something Claude makes for you, not just text in a chat. Anthropic describes it as “anything Claude makes for you that you’d put in front of someone”: a document, a diagram, a dashboard, a one-page site or a small interactive tool.
Step by step
- Check the setting: Artifacts need Cloud code execution and file creation turned on in Claude’s settings.
- Ask for the thing, not the text: “Make a one-page flyer”, “Build a tip calculator”, “Draw a flowchart of our ordering process”.
- Look at it beside the chat.
- Ask for changes in plain English: “Bigger headline”, “Add a column for tax”, “Use our colors: navy and gold”.
- Share or export it when it’s ready: Anthropic’s Help Center says template-based Artifacts can be exported to formats like Word, PDF or PowerPoint, depending on the template.
Things to make
- Documents: a one-page flyer, a price sheet, a staff checklist.
- Diagrams: a flowchart of how orders move through your business. See make a flowchart.
- Charts: paste a small table and ask for a chart.
- Small tools: a quote calculator, a shift planner, a quiz. See build a simple app.
- Slides: a short presentation from your notes. See make a presentation.
Prompts to copy
A calculator:
Make an interactive calculator for my cleaning business: the customer picks the number of bedrooms (1-5)
and bathrooms (1-4), and it shows a price: $80 base, plus $25 per bedroom and $20 per bathroom.
Simple, clean design, works on a phone.
A one-page document:
Make a one-page "Welcome, new staff" sheet for my café: opening checklist, closing checklist,
who to call for what. Leave placeholders like [MANAGER PHONE] for details I'll fill in.
Mistakes to avoid
- Asking for text when you want a thing. Say “make a…” or “build a…”.
- Real prices and phone numbers you haven’t checked. Use placeholders, then fill them in.
- Treating a small tool like finished software. It’s great for internal use and prototypes; a customer-facing tool with payments or personal data needs proper building.
Good to know
Artifact features and templates differ by plan and change over time. If a setting isn’t where this page says, search Anthropic’s Help Center for “artifacts”.
