How to Build a Simple App or Tool with Claude (No Coding Needed)
Describe the tool in plain English (who uses it, what they enter, what it shows) and Claude builds it as an interactive Artifact beside the chat. Try it, then ask for changes the way you’d talk to a designer. It’s ideal for calculators, checklists, quizzes and prototypes; anything with customer data or payments needs a proper build.
The short version
Claude can build a working mini-app from a paragraph of plain English. Anthropic lists “small interactive tools” among the things Artifacts can be. Describe it, try it, refine it, all in the same chat.
Step by step
- Turn on “Cloud code execution and file creation” in Claude’s settings; Artifacts need it.
- Describe the tool: who uses it, what they enter, what it shows, and any rules.
- Try it in the Artifact panel beside the chat.
- Ask for changes in plain English, one or two at a time.
- Test it with real cases, including odd ones: zero, very large numbers, empty fields.
- Share it with your team, or use it as a prototype for a developer.
Ideas
- Quote calculator: price from size, options and extras.
- Staff checklist: opening and closing tasks with tick boxes.
- Shift planner: a week’s grid you can fill in.
- Customer quiz: “Which plan is right for you?” in five questions.
- Savings calculator for a sales conversation.
Prompts to copy
A quote calculator:
Build an interactive quote calculator for my painting business.
Inputs: room count (1-10), ceiling height (8, 9 or 10 ft), include ceilings (yes/no), rush job (yes/no).
Price: $350 per room, +15% for 9 ft, +25% for 10 ft, +$120 per room for ceilings, +20% rush.
Show the total and a line-by-line breakdown. Clean design that works on a phone.
Improve it:
Add a "Copy quote" button that copies the breakdown as text. Make the total bigger. Round to the nearest $5.
Check it:
List 5 test cases with the expected total for each, so I can check the calculator is right.
Mistakes to avoid
- Vague descriptions. Spell out the inputs, the rules and the result.
- Not testing edge cases. Try zero, the maximum and odd combinations.
- Using it for real customer data or payments. That needs proper security, storage and hosting.
When you need a developer
When customers will use it on your website, it needs to save data, take payments, or connect to your booking or inventory system. A Claude prototype is still a great start: it shows exactly what you want built. Get a proposal if you’d like help.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You describe what you want and what to change; Claude writes the code. Knowing a little helps when something goes wrong, but it isn't required for small tools.
Can I put the tool on my website?
You can share an Artifact, and the code can be copied. For a tool on your business website, have a developer check it for security, accessibility and speed first.
