The short version

Copilot Voice turns Copilot into a conversation: you talk, it answers out loud, and you follow up like a phone call. It’s handy when your hands are busy, when you’re thinking out loud, or when typing is a chore.

Step by step

  1. Open Copilot in the app or on the web, and sign in.
  2. Select the Voice icon in the message box.
  3. Allow microphone access if your browser or device asks.
  4. Wait for the greeting, then talk normally.
  5. Mute with the Microphone icon when you need a moment; select it again to resume.
  6. End with the X icon.

On Windows

  • Press the Copilot key or Windows key + C to open Copilot, then start a voice chat.
  • “Hey, Copilot” is an opt-in wake word that starts a voice chat hands-free.

What it’s good for

  • Thinking out loud: planning a week, a talk or a hard conversation.
  • Practicing: a job interview, a presentation or a new language.
  • Cooking and fixing things: questions while your hands are full.
  • Learning: “explain it again, simpler” works well by voice.

Prompts to copy

Say these out loud:

text
Help me practice for a job interview for an office manager role.
Ask me one question at a time and give me short feedback after each answer.
text
I'm cooking chicken thighs and I've got 30 minutes. Walk me through it step by step,
and wait for me to say "next" before each step.
text
Let's practice Spanish. Speak slowly, keep it simple, and correct my mistakes gently.
text
I need to tell my landlord the rent will be a week late. Help me figure out what to say.

Example

You say: “I’m giving a five-minute talk at my daughter’s school about being a nurse. Help me plan it.”

A good result: Copilot asks who the audience is and how old they are, suggests three simple points, and offers to let you rehearse. You then say “Let me practice the opening” and get feedback in the same conversation.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Talking in a noisy room. Background voices and TV get picked up.
  • Saying private details out loud. Card numbers, passwords and health details shouldn’t go into any chat.
  • Expecting endless sessions. Microsoft says voice conversations may have session limits and can disconnect automatically.
  • Trusting spoken facts without checking. Ask Copilot to send sources in the chat for anything important.

Good to know

Voice is available in a growing set of languages and regions. On personal accounts, Microsoft’s privacy controls have a separate Training on voice conversations switch. Add your screen or camera to a voice chat with Copilot Vision.

Related: use Copilot in Windows and keep your data private in Copilot.
