Passerby · any YouTube video

Count the traffic in any YouTube video

Paste a YouTube link to a street camera, a live stream or your own footage. Passerby counts the pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles crossing a line as the video plays, on your own device.

Find a live camera on YouTube ↗Opens YouTube in a new tab. Pick a video, press Share, copy the link and paste it above.

YouTube’s player. Once you start counting, Passerby shows a second copy of this video with what it counts marked; you keep controlling the video here.

Your browser asks which screen to share: choose this tab. Only the player is counted, and the picture never leaves your device.

Press Start counting and share this tab.

Passerby’s copy of the video appears here, with everything it counts marked.

The counts, the counting line, the pedestrian line and the spreadsheet download work as on the camera versions.

How it works

You share the player

A web page can’t look inside a YouTube player, so Passerby asks you to share this tab, keeps only the player’s part of it, and counts what it sees. That’s why you see the video twice: YouTube’s player, which you control, and Passerby’s copy with the counting marked. Stop sharing from the browser’s bar at any time.

Keep it in view

Only what’s on screen is shared, so keep the player visible and playing. Pausing pauses the count; the hourly rate goes by the time you’ve been counting.

Same counter

Detection, the counting lines and the CSV are the same as on the Caltrans version. Higher video quality in the player (the gear icon) helps it find pedestrians and distant cars.

Videos play in YouTube’s own player (privacy-enhanced mode) and belong to their owners. Some videos can’t be played outside YouTube.
